Cooling A Philadelphia Row Home With Ductless Air Conditioning

PROBLEM: This 1920's home had electric radiators for heat but no central air. This meant our homeowners had been relying on bulky window air conditioners that are a pain to install and take down.

SOLUTION: ECI Comfort installed a Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Split system. This system doesn't need ductwork to add both air conditioning and supplemental heat, so it's a perfect way to solve heating and cooling problems in older homes that lack the extra space for ductwork.

Our clients loved their beautiful, 1920's Philadelphia home, but knew it was ready for a much needed update -- adding efficient air conditioning. With a baby on the way and another humid summer approaching quickly, these homeowners needed greater comfort in their home.

After doing some research, our clients decided that a ductless system would be the ideal way to keep their home comfortable. They were already working on some mild renovations, making the addition of ductless units an easy project to tack on before the baby (and the warmer temperatures) arrived.

As you can see below, ECI was able to install the main outdoor unit on the roof of the building -- ensuring its safety and keeping it out of the way, which is important in neighborhoods where the ground floor outdoor space is limited.

While the Mitsubishi heat pumps can be either ducted or ductless, we decided a ductless system would fit better in this type of home. After installing the outdoor unit on the roof, we were able to install four mini-split units -- one in each of the three bedrooms and one in kitchen. The placement of the indoor units will allow the homeowners to create separate zones of comfort in their home that are adjustable to their needs at the touch of a button.

Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Splits are the ultimate solution for cooling and heating needs in a Philadelphia rowhome, but can be a bit tricky to install at times due to obstacles such as shared walls or neighboring homes. In this case, we were able to utilize roof penetration for line sets to reach the outdoor heat pump on the roof.

In the master bedroom (right), we took the lines into the closet. There was a small cavity between the master bedroom and middle bedroom which allowed us to meet the line sets for the two units, connect to a condensate pump, and run to the roof.

In situations where the drain cannot be pitched to an outside area, a pump becomes necessary. Luckily, with the help of our install manager, Steve, we were able to find a small void in the wall to hide the pump. Out of sight and out of mind!

The rest of the units, including the kitchen and nursery, were able to be drained directly to the outside, eliminating the need for a condensate pump. With the line sets hidden pretty well, the home's aesthetics could also be preserved.

These units will be able to air condition (and heat) the home whenever necessary. And with the weather getting more unpredictable, you never know when you'll need heat one day and air conditioning the next. With Mitsubishi's heat pump system, our homeowners will be able to get the comfort they want any day of the year and at the touch of a button. Oh, and they never have to worry about window units again! No more guessing when to install them or when to take them out, only to be surprised by an unexpected shift in the weather. Our homeowners can finally enjoy the comfort they deserve.
