One of our comfort specialists, Joe, had the pleasure of meeting Lisa to discuss her home comfort issues -- specifically the third-floor that functioned as an apartment. Lisa's beautiful home in Jenkintown was heated by a gas-fired boiler with a single-zone cast iron radiator system. But trying to manage the temperature and keep her tenant comfortable has always been a problem; using only one thermostat for all three floors, including the apartment, tends to create a temperature imbalance .
Initial Discussions
About four years ago, Lisa contacted ECI Comfort and hired us to install a three-zone Mitsubishi ductless mini-split system on her first and second floors. When meeting the second time around, she explained that adding a mini-split system was one of the best thing she has ever done for her home! However, there was still one problem: the third floor apartment.
The first system we installed helped improve comfort throughout her first floor. Lisa loved the zoned control and ability to reach desired comfort levels in different areas of the home. This allowed her to lower the temperature on the thermostat (in the winter) while allowing the Mitsubishi ductless units to supplement the heat. This added another feature that Lisa loved -- lower fuel usage -- which provided monthly utility savings.
Lisa's air conditioning also prompted some concern. Certain rooms in the home experienced "hot spots," created discomfort in the warmer months of the year. With the addition of these Mitsubishi mini-splits, she was able to create zoned control of the problem areas as well as decrease humidity and lower the temperature. This resulted in a cooler and more comfortable space!
With the third floor apartment, Lisa found herself having to raise the thermostat temperature to help heat the area. This would cause the boiler to short-cycle, increasing energy costs. In doing so, the radiators would quickly heat up, often overheating the space, creating a need to turn the thermostat back down again. Her tenant was often uncomfortable, leading to Lisa needing to make a decision.
During our initial conversation, Lisa told her tenant, "ECI is amazing. The first installation they did for ductless was life changing and we love it. It's the perfect thing to do here and I wouldn't call anyone else."
She knew the answer to her problem was similar to the answer a few years ago: adding another Mitsubishi ductless mini-split.
Once Joe was able to offer 0% financing for 48 months, Lisa did not hesitate, and we were able to install her new unit within days!
The Install
The project was very straight forward and perfect for ECI Comfort. As Mitsubishi Diamond Elite contractors, we excel at designing, installing, and servicing Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling systems!
On the right, you can see the indoor unit, installed on the wall. The Mitsubishi high-wall ductless unit is perfect for rooms of any size, as they have multiple BTU outputs! It stays out of the way by being mounted up high. In this home, we were able to install it on an exterior wall, creating easy access for line sets and a condensate drain.
When installed on an exterior wall like this, the lines are able to be hidden within line hide on the exterior of the home. The line hide is a vinyl covering that comes in a few different colors and can also be painted to match any exterior cover!
As for the outdoor unit, we were able to install a single-zone heat pump. Sized perfectly for the load, this heat pump will be able to power the indoor high-wall unit, providing the perfect heating and cooling fix.

The Results
ECI ensures an efficient and tidy install every time. We provide drop cloths, boot covers, gloves, and anything else needed to ensure a clean visit. We even vacuum and wipe down our finished work area, leaving no mess behind!

A last special piece to this project in particular, was taking advantage of training our employees, which allows them to continuously improve. Steve, our install manager, met Joe at the home to startup the install crew. The two walked through the job with our installers, Mike and Stephen, explaining what the plan was.
Steve was able to take some extra time to give Mike a few pointers on installing a Mitsubishi ductless high-wall indoor unit. He focused on things he has picked up in his many years of experience, such as picking the right spot to mount it to have the lines come in where you want them to!
