These new homeowners in Rydal, Pa have recently arrived from another state this Summer. They absolutely love their beautiful, older colonial home. However, they did not care for the heat and humidity inside of it. It was time to make a change.
With an older home that was built in 1825, there is a lack of any cooling system. This home also does not use a forced-air system, so there is no preexisting ductwork. Without ductwork, central air cannot be added unless new ductwork is installed. This process becomes expensive and would require changing the look of this beautiful home.
After relying on wall and window AC units, fans, and the high-cost and inefficiency of using them, these homeowners were ultimately ready to move onto a better system.
After coming across ECI Comfort and receiving a consultation, we were able to guide these homeowners to their perfect comfort solution to beat the heat; a Unico High Velocity system.

Problem: New homeowners in Rydal, Pa needed a way to address the Summer heat and humidity in their older colonial home.
Solution: Installing a Unico High Velocity air conditioning system in the attic to provide conditioned air for the second and third floors of the home.
Installing a Unico High Velocity system into this colonial home is a fairly straightforward process. For this home, an air handler and central plenum were placed in the attic. A plenum is similar to ductwork, but, it is not a traditionally constructed duct. It is a flexible 'pipe', as seen here:
As for the supply outlets that come off of the main supply plenum, they are even thinner, flexible pipes with sound-reducing properties. They can be hidden above ceilings, in walls, and/or in closets in order to arrange them into each room without major construction. A small hole is drilled for the supply outlet in the ceiling or wall of the room, wherever it is best recommended for air circulation. Below will show pictures of the supply outlets in a room, closet, and attic from this specific home!
Where the air comes out of the supply outlets:
As you can see, these outlets are very small and are tucked away in the corners of a room. This gives these homeowners the ability to cool their home with minimal invasion into each room!
Here are a few more examples:
Lastly, one of the more unique designs was having four outlets come into the homeowners master bedroom through the shadow boxing above a closet:
Next, we will show how we hid the supply outlets inside of closets:
Here is a picture of it through the wall in a room. This is only necessary if there is not local closet or space above. Some homeowners choose to box these in, but others leave them open!
Finally, a picture of our 'work-in-progress' within the homeowner's attic:
As an added "bonus," we were able to see the wall-units still installed, and compare it to the simplicity of the new high velocity outlets:
Tying things together, this system will be driven by a single outdoor unit, a Bosch Bova inverter heat pump. This will not only provide extreme cooling comfort, but also provides a supplemental heat source! It will allow the homeowners to warm their home in some of the milder months without having to fire up the radiator system. This amazing 5,500 square foot home will now be set to beat the heat!
