The ECI Comfort Process
Overview
Chris and Connie Knipe were looking to upgrade their 100-year-old Fairmount, Philadelphia rowhome with central air. They had finally had it with the noisy, inefficient window air conditioning units that they were used to -- but not fond of. However, they were concerned that central air meant that their historic rowhome would need to be retrofitted with big, bulky ductwork. That concern was quickly put to rest after their free consultation with ECI Comfort.
Strategy
Fortunately for the Knipe's, we have tons of experience in installing central air systems in historic homes, and we also understand homeowners' concerns when it comes to preserving aesthetics and design. For this project we thought that a Mitsubishi GE18 wall-mounted Ductless unit would be perfect for their first floor living space. The unit can quickly and quietly cool the first floor and, as a bonus, can provide heat as well. Since the Knipe's already used cast iron radiators for heat during the winter, they didn't think it would be necessary to use the heating capabilities of the Ductless unit, but it was good to know it was there.
To make the rooms upstairs more comfortable, they chose a Mitsubishi SEZ concealed ducted unit. Due to its flat profile the SEZ fit easily into the small attic space above the second floor. Short duct runs were installed for each room, making the upper level of the home as pleasant as the first.
Results
We caught up with the Knipe's about a year after they had their new system installed. Chris and Connie have been thrilled with the results. The new system kept their rowhome evenly cooled, and they were impressed with how quickly and quietly it worked. And, as a surprise to them, they actually used the heat from the Mitsubishi ducted unit to keep comfortable during the notoriously cold winter of 2013-2014.
