Multi-Model Ductless Hyper Heat System In South Philly

Ductless install in South Philly Rowhome

PROBLEM:  Our homeowner was tired of continuously installing window units every year to beat the summer heat, only to be let down with inefficiency and noisy "window-rattling". His older rowhome also featured a 50+ year old boiler at the end of its life. The homeowner wanted an efficient system that wouldn't compromise space in his home, while providing both cooling and heating.

SOLUTION:
ECI Comfort installed a multi-zone Mitsubishi Ductless Hyper-Heat system.  The system doesn't require ductwork and provides both air conditioning and heat. It is a great way to solve heating and cooling problems in older homes, while maintaining the limited space available. For South Philly rowhomes, ductless AC is the perfect match. This install also featured for the first time, Mitsubishi's brand new FS Model indoor unit!

Our homeowner, was tired of the blazing heat and harsh winters that come standard in Philadelphia. The window units and old boiler he relied on were no longer maintaining the home's comfort, and he was ready to find a permanent fix. But like most rowhome owners, there was one major issue: lack of space. After reaching out to ECI Comfort with interest in adding a Mitsubishi Ductless system, our comfort specialist Joe headed his way.

Initial Call

In the initial call, our homeowner informed us that he had no air conditioning and an old boiler that was well past its lifespan. He wanted to find a solution that did not include adding ductwork and would eliminate the need for window units. Ductwork would compromise a third of the space in his home and provide only single-zone climate control. Window units are unsightly, noisy, and costly - eliminating them from discussion. With Mitsubishi Ductless Hyper-Heating Mini-Splits, there is little to no construction, no unsightly soffits, and zoned control!

Our comfort specialist, Joe, explained the benefits of ductless systems by showcasing recent projects in the area. These projects helped identify exactly where to place the units, as well as what models to install to provide proper filtration and zoning. After consideration, our homeowner decided on three GL models for the kitchen and bedrooms, and the new FS model for his living room.

The Home

The home was a standard South Philly rowhome complete with a small backyard. The only downside of this home was its lack of central cooling and an old heating system. While the space needed for a traditional system would cause complication, the flexibility of mini-splits allow for compatibility with any type of home. The units can be mounted on the wall, floor, or ceiling, and the Mitsubishi ductless system is known for its "whisper quiet" operation, ensuring it won't be a bother.

The inside of the home consisted of an open living room, kitchen, and hallway connecting the two, with the second floor containing two bedrooms and a bathroom. The second floor bedrooms were two areas of priority for maximum comfort while maintaining space. Our homeowner had ideas of where to place the units, as draining and hiding the line sets were important to him.

What Size Ductless Mini-Split is Best for Your Home

For the first and second floors, four indoor units were needed to handle the cooling and heating. One GL model unit was placed in each bedroom, as well as the kitchen. With the new FS model installed to cover the living room, we reach a total of four indoor units.

The brand-new FS model is taking over for the retired FH model to provide the best quality and comfort for your home. The new model is great for larger open spaces, as it features the Mitsubishi 3D I-See Sensor. This scans the room and directs tempered air to warmer or colder spots, creating an even greater area of comfort.

FS vs. FH vs. GL

Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat indoor, high-wall mounts feature three models: GL, FS, and FH. The GL model is the most compact of the three, making it great for rooms of any size or style. The GL is also the quietest unit in the industry at only 19 decibels, and features nano-platinum filtration.

The FS and FH coincide with one another, as the FS is the new version of the FH head.  On top of the 3D I-see Sensor, the FS models also come standard with triple filtration and a dual barrier coated heat exchanger, a brand new feature with this model. The dual barrier coating helps protect from any dirt or dust that may get into the unit, increasing the longevity and efficiency of the unit.

The Mitsubishi electric heat pumps also feature Hyper-Heating meaning that these heat pumps will perform with full capacity even when it's below freezing outside. This makes Hyper-Heat heat pumps designed for year-round comfort, with an enhanced compressor to deliver heat at temperatures as low as -13° Fahrenheit!

The Install

After Joe's walkthrough with the homeowner and our Install Supervisor, Matt, the entire project was mapped out as to where the units would be installed. Mike and Tom from our install crew arrived early and got a rundown on where to start, including specific locations for where the line sets would run to remain hidden. In just four days, our crew was able to professionally and efficiently install the new Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat Multi-Zone Ductless system while maintaining a clean workspace.

Mike and Tom were able to mount the unit above the doorway, not disturbing the kitchen's functionality. Outside of the home, our crew found a spot to install the outdoor unit, being able to handle the tight workspace rowhomes present.

The best solution for a Philadelphia rowhome is an efficient, year-round Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Split Hyper-Heat comfort system. This system will not only save the homeowner money, but have them smiling during the blazing heat waves and the raging winters with extreme comfort!
