Older homes were rarely designed with central air-conditioning or conventional ductwork in mind. Large ducts can require walls and ceilings to be opened, soffits to be constructed, and original architectural features to be altered. The original portion of the home had an open attic that could accommodate high-velocity HVAC equipment. Existing pathways within the structure also offered opportunities to route small, flexible ducts to the first and second floors. The newer addition was more complicated. It included the homeowner’s primary bedroom and an open kitchen and dining area, but it did not have accessible attic space. Connecting this section to the high-velocity ductwork in the original home was neither practical nor desirable. One traditional central air-conditioning system would not have served every area effectively. The house needed a solution designed around both its architecture and the homeowner’s daily routine.
High-Velocity AC and Mitsubishi Electric Ductless Technology
A hybrid cooling design allowed each part of the home to receive the type of air-conditioning best suited to its construction.
The 4 key components included across the two systems:
- A high-velocity air-conditioning system for the original portion of the home
- A two-zone Mitsubishi Electric mini-split system for the newer addition
- Independent comfort control for the primary bedroom
- Targeted cooling for the open kitchen and dining area
This combination provided whole-home comfort without forcing conventional ductwork into areas where it did not belong.
High-Velocity Air-Conditioning for the Original Home
The open attic in the oldest section of the house offered an ideal location for the high-velocity system’s mechanical equipment. Small, flexible ducts could then be routed through carefully selected areas to deliver conditioned air to both floors.
High-velocity air-conditioning is particularly well suited for historic and older homes. Its compact ductwork typically requires far less structural alteration than a conventional forced-air system.
Traditional ductwork may require large sections of a home to be opened or redesigned. High-velocity ductwork offers a more targeted, minimally invasive way to introduce modern air-conditioning. The home’s existing structure became part of the solution, allowing the system to provide comfortable airflow while preserving much of the original architecture.
Mitsubishi Electric Mini-Splits for the Newer Addition
The newer addition required a different approach. No usable attic space was available, and extending the high-velocity ductwork into this section would have involved unnecessary disruption. A two-zone Mitsubishi Electric ductless mini-split system provided an efficient alternative. One indoor unit serves the primary bedroom, while the other conditions the open kitchen and dining area.
Independent temperature control allows the homeowner to cool the rooms she is using without conditioning every part of the house to the same temperature. At night, she can keep the primary bedroom comfortable without cooling the entire home. During the day, she can use the high-velocity system in the main house along with the Mitsubishi Electric mini-split serving the kitchen and dining area. The result is personalized comfort where she wants it, when she wants it.
Improved Humidity Control and Summertime Comfort
Cooling the air was only part of the homeowner’s comfort needs. Humidity control was equally important, especially in an older home that had never had air-conditioning. High-velocity systems are known for effective moisture removal. Reducing excess indoor humidity helps the air feel cooler and more comfortable without relying solely on lower thermostat settings.
Better humidity control can also help create a more consistent indoor environment throughout the hot and humid Pennsylvania summer. Combined with the targeted control of the Mitsubishi Electric mini-splits, the new system gives the homeowner a flexible way to manage both temperature and comfort throughout the house.
