Solving One Uncomfortable Room with a Ductless Mini-Split

THE PROBLEM: After nearly 35 years of living with one of their bedroom's that was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, the homeowners needed a better solution as their family continued to grow. Because the bedroom was located far from the central HVAC system in a multi-level split-level home, it did not receive enough airflow to remain consistently comfortable.

THE SOLUTION: A single-zone ductless mini-split gave the bedroom its own dedicated source of heating and cooling. The homeowners can now control the room’s temperature independently without replacing the central HVAC system or making extensive modifications to the home’s existing ductwork.

When One Uncomfortable Room Becomes More Important

Outdoor Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pump

Almost every home seems to have one room that never feels quite right. It may be the bedroom at the end of the hallway, a finished space above the garage, a sunroom that heats up quickly or an addition built years after the home’s original HVAC system was installed. Regardless of the season, the room always seems to be a few degrees warmer or colder than the rest of the house.

For nearly 35 years, the homeowners in this case simply accepted that one room in their split-level home would never be as comfortable as the others. During the summer, it stayed warmer than the rest of the house. When winter arrived, it became noticeably colder. It wasn’t ideal, but it was something they had learned to live with.

As their family continued to grow, keeping the room comfortable became much more important. The homeowners wanted the space to provide reliable comfort for family members staying there, whether it was a hot and humid summer night or a cold Pennsylvania winter evening. That change gave them a reason to finally solve a comfort problem that had existed for decades.

A Single-Zone Ductless Mini-Split for Dedicated Comfort

A 1:1 ductless mini-split system offered a more direct answer. A single-zone mini-split connects one outdoor heat pump to one indoor unit. Unlike a central HVAC system that conditions several rooms through the same duct network, the mini-split focuses specifically on the room where the indoor unit is installed. That gives the bedroom its own dedicated source of heating and air conditioning.

Instead of waiting for conditioned air to travel through several levels of the home and reach the end of a long duct run, the system delivers heating and cooling directly into the room. The homeowners can adjust the bedroom’s temperature independently without changing the thermostat setting for the rest of the house. The existing central heating and cooling system can continue doing its job throughout the home, while the ductless mini-split supplies the extra comfort this room has always needed.

Supplemental Heating and Cooling for Extreme Weather

The new mini-split does not have to carry the heating and cooling needs of the entire house. It works as a supplemental system for the bedroom. During mild weather, the room may need very little additional conditioning. On extremely hot summer days, however, the ductless system can provide the extra cooling needed to prevent the bedroom from becoming warm and uncomfortable.

The same idea applies during the winter. When cold outdoor temperatures make the room more difficult to heat, the mini-split can provide supplemental warmth directly where it is needed. This room-by-room control is one of the most useful benefits of ductless heating and cooling. Instead of overheating or overcooling the entire home to compensate for one problem area, the homeowners can focus energy on the space that needs it.

Solving an Uncomfortable Room Without Changing the Whole House

After nearly 35 years of living with the same hot-and-cold bedroom, the homeowners finally found a solution that fit both the room and the home. The single-zone ductless mini-split now provides dedicated heating and cooling without requiring extensive ductwork modifications. The central HVAC system continues serving the rest of the split-level home, while the bedroom can be adjusted independently whenever it needs additional comfort.

Most importantly, their growing family now has a comfortable space to enjoy throughout the year. Sometimes the right HVAC solution isn’t about replacing the largest system or changing the entire house. Sometimes it’s about listening to what one room—and one growing family—actually needs. If you have a bedroom, addition, sunroom or bonus room that is always too hot or too cold, a ductless mini-split may provide the targeted comfort you’ve been missing.
