Retrofitting a Historic Chestnut Hill Home with Unico High-Velocity AC

PROBLEM: Our homeowner, Alex, recently purchased this charming new Chestnut Hill home. It needed some updating, which was to be done while maintaining its historic value. But the biggest issue in an older home like this is the lack of air conditioning -- something Alex and his family were not going to live without.

SOLUTION: ECI Comfort installed a Unico High-Velocity system with a Bosch Heat Pump Inverter and Green Series Air Handler. This system will provide even and comfortable temperatures throughout each room, drastically reduce humidity, and create the perfect comfort solution while minimizing any changes to the interior!

Historic Chestnut Hill PA Home

Welcome to Chestnut Hill Historic District in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—a neighborhood renowned for its stunning nineteenth-century architecture. These historic homes, including Alex’s, are masterpieces of classical design, often featuring Late Victorian styles that have stood the test of time. Originally a link between the city and surrounding farmlands, Chestnut Hill became part of Philadelphia in 1854. Today, it’s known for its large, beautiful homes that capture the essence of a bygone era.

However, many of these older homes were built without modern air conditioning, relying on boiler and radiator systems that are excellent for heating during the colder months. But when summer hits, homeowners like Alex are left sweltering unless they resort to unsightly window units. Alex, like many others, wanted a more aesthetically pleasing and efficient solution for his historic home.

The Comfort Consultation with ECI Comfort

The first step in Alex’s journey to a cooler home was scheduling a comfort consultation with ECI Comfort. For Alex, the goal was to cool the second and third floors of his historic home. Although he had previously used ductless mini-splits and appreciated their effectiveness, he didn’t want the units visible on his walls this time around. We also considered a conventional ducted system, but the idea of large ductwork and soffits was unappealing. Ultimately, we decided that a high-velocity system was the perfect match for his home.

The challenge: air conditioning for a historic home

The challenge for Alex's home was clear: installing an air conditioning system that would maintain the home’s historic charm while minimizing invasive construction. Conventional ducted systems were out of the question due to the large soffits and reduced closet space they require—especially in older homes where space is already at a premium. While ductless mini-split systems offer benefits, the wall-mounted units could disrupt the home’s historic appearance.

The perfect solution? A Unico High-Velocity Air Conditioning System.

Why high-velocity is the ideal solution for historic homes

Unico High-Velocity Systems are uniquely suited for retrofitting older homes like Alex’s. Unlike conventional systems, high-velocity systems use small, flexible ducts that can be easily concealed within walls and closets, preserving the home’s original architecture. This means no bulky ductwork or unsightly soffits.

In addition to being more discreet, high-velocity systems are also quieter, thanks to their sound-deadening properties. Homeowners like Alex will only hear a gentle airflow, unlike the noise from window units or traditional systems. High-velocity systems also remove up to 30% more humidity than conventional systems, providing a more comfortable living environment. Lastly, these systems use ‘aspiration’ to evenly distribute air throughout the room, ensuring consistent cooling.

Benefits of a Bosch Inverter Heat Pump

In addition to the high-velocity system, we discussed pairing it with a Bosch Inverter Heat Pump. This combination is one of the best on the market, offering both variable-speed air conditioning and a supplemental heat source.

While Alex’s existing boiler and radiator system worked well during the cold months, it was inefficient during milder seasons. A heat pump would allow for a more efficient heat source, reducing the boiler’s workload and preventing short-cycling, which often leads to heat loss. The Bosch Inverter Heat Pump operates at anywhere from 25% to 100% capacity, delivering precision comfort and increased efficiency.

The Installation Process of High-Velocity AC

Before any new installation, our install supervisor and comfort specialist conduct a pre-installation walkthrough the homeowner. This visit allowed us to confirm the equipment locations, supply tube placements, and outlet locations, ensuring Alex was completely satisfied with the plan. For Alex’s home, we carefully planned the tube locations and discussed the best spots for each supply outlet. We also focused on the placement of indoor and outdoor equipment.

After confirming every detail with Alex, we were ready to begin the installation. However, due to industry-wide equipment delays, particularly with the Bosch Inverter Heat Pump, we faced a significant lead time. To save time, we decided on a two-phase installation.

First, ECI’s install crew completed the indoor components, including the air handler, supply tubes, and line set. A few weeks later, once we received the outdoor unit, we were able to finish the installation.

Alex was thrilled with the outcome, praising the installers for their attention to detail and clear communication. One of our lead installers, Jim, even found a creative solution to conceal the line set, routing it down a wall cavity from the fourth-floor attic to the basement, keeping the exterior of the home untouched.

Final Thoughts

We’re eager to hear how much Alex enjoys his new Unico High Velocity heating and cooling system and look forward to checking in during each tune-up. At ECI Comfort, we’re dedicated to providing customized HVAC solutions that enhance comfort while preserving the beauty of historic homes.
