Heating Oil Precision: How Weights and Measures Guarantee Accurate Oil Deliveries

How do you know if a gallon of oil is really a gallon of oil? The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts homeowners will spend 27% more this winter than last winter, and if it's a little colder it might even be 37% on home heating oil -- so checking up on those oil deliveries is more valuable than ever before. Luckily, the Bucks County Weights & Measures Inspector does that for you. In this blog, we will cover the benefits of Weights & Measures, and how it ensures that you're getting what you pay for.

What is Weights & Measures?

The Division of Weights & Measures focuses on one core objective: making sure Bucks County consumers get what they paid for. Every dollar matters, which is why the Weights & Measures Division has staff working across the County to protect consumers, businesses, and manufacturers from unfair business practices and assure equity in the marketplace.

The Weights and Measures Division is responsible for regulating a diverse array of products and services, including:
  • Retail Motor Fuel Dispensers
  • Coal
  • Firewood
  • Home Heating Oil
  • Liquid Propane Gas
  • Small and Medium Commercial Scales
  • Large Truck Scales
  • Checkout Scanner Systems
  • Package Checking
  • Petroleum Terminal Facilities

How Does This Help Homeowners With Heating Oil?

When you as a consumer purchase home heating oil, how do you know if you received the correct amount? Prior to every heating season Bucks County Weights & Measures inspects all 125 oil trucks on the road to make sure that you get the heating oil you pay for. The inspection measures each truck's meter and flow rate of 200 gallons twice (400 gallons total). The Weights & Measures inspector is also constantly checking all devices to make sure that the mechanical instruments do not malfunction because of normal wear and tear. A new sticker will be placed on the truck with the year that the inspection was done if they pass. So if you ever have a question about whether the company you are using has been inspected, just look for that sticker on the back of the truck.

If the meter fails to accurately measure the proper amount of gallons or if it falls outside of acceptable tolerances, it will be immediately taken out of service. In order to rectify the issue, the meter will undergo necessary repairs and undergo proper calibration by a certified and licensed dealer. Only after it has been retested and proven to meet the required standards, will it be placed back into service.

Rest assured that at ECI Comfort, we take the necessary steps to ensure the quality and accuracy of our oil deliveries. That's why our trucks undergo thorough inspections before each heating season. In early October, our trucks were meticulously inspected and proudly received their new certification sticker. This means that when you choose ECI Comfort, you can have peace of mind knowing that the oil being delivered to your home is exactly what you paid for. Contact ECI Comfort
