What is a Smart Register?

You've heard of smartphones, smart watches, smart thermostats, and other "smart" products that aim to make our lives easier; but have you heard of smart registers? Automated smart registers, or vents, work with your HVAC system to control airflow in each room. The vents can close to stop airflow from entering a specific room, or open to allow more airflow depending on your programmed preferences. Continue reading to learn more about smart registers and their benefits.

How Do Smart Registers Work?

Smart registers intelligently redirect airflow to the right rooms at the right time. While most homeowners are able to manually open or close their vents, smart registers can do it automatically, just as a smart thermostat or programmed thermostat changes the temperature based on preset preferences. When someone leaves the room, the register can automatically close (or adjust the temperature) based on how warm or cool you want the room to be.

Smart HVAC vents typically involve three helpful components:
  • Motion and proximity sensors to detect any activity in the room
  • Smart thermostats to automatically adjust the temperature
  • Motor or actuator to automatically open and close the vents to redirect air as required
Some popular brands are Flair Smart Vents, Keen Smart Vents, and Ecovent Smart Vents.

Advantages of Smart Registers

The main benefit of using smart vents is that you get zoning without the need for a fully new decentralized or zoning system, such as baseboard heat or ductless air handlers. Like ductless heating and air conditioning systems, smart HVAC vents allow for independent temperature control in each room. Not only can you have personalized control, but you can also save money by heating and cooling only occupied rooms. You can even remotely control your automated vents through smartphone apps.

The technology and sensors in smart vents work to eliminate uneven room temperatures, therefore balancing heat and AC across your home. In other words, they can be great at helping rooms that are always too hot or too cold. Plus, you have the option to only change over some of the vents in your home, as not all need to be automated for them to work.

Smart registers are professional grade and built to last with rugged steel construction and flexible mount options. They can also come in many different colors to match any style or decor. Finally, the vents come in different sizes so that they can easily replace your existing vents.

Disadvantages of Smart Registers

A major disadvantage of smart registers is that they must be compatible with existing systems and thermostats. According to Flair, the vents are compatible with Nest, ecobee, and Honeywell smart thermostats. But overall device compatibility may be an issue when trying to install them. Additionally, smart vents have a higher upfront cost than regular vents.

Some HVAC experts also argue that restricting airflow by closing vents could be detrimental to the longevity and effectiveness of your heating and air conditioning system. When using your air conditioning, it's possible that blocking airflow could disable the unit's fan system and cause the compressor to fail. This could lead to frozen evaporator coils and expensive repairs. When it comes to heating, closed vents may lead to cracked heat exchangers in furnaces and longer run times for heat pumps. Not only might you have expensive repairs, but broken parts will lead to inefficiency and cause you to spend more money to run the heat and AC.
