9 Benefits of Oil Heat

Whether you heat your home using oil, gas, or electricity, there are always pros and cons. While it may seem like everyone is trying to switch off of oil heat nowadays, it is still one of the most popular fuel sources. Here are six reasons why oil heat is a good choice for your home.

Benefits of oil heat

Main Advantages of Choosing Oil Heat

1. Heating oil systems last longer

The average life expectancy of an oil heater is 30 or more years if properly maintained. This minimizes the number of times you will need to spend money on a replacement system.

2. Heating oil is reliable and safe

With oil heat, there is no risk of carbon monoxide leaks or explosions. Plus, oil only combusts inside your furnace and can be stored for long periods of time on your property. Heating oil also offers you a choice of many suppliers, whereas gas heat only gives you one option. This allows you to choose a company that you can trust to provide you with quick deliveries at fair prices.

3. Heating oil bills are measurable

Whereas gas is measured in BTUs or "therms" and can be hard to understand, your oil usage is easy to measure in simple terms: gallons and price per gallon. Plus, gas bills often contain "mystery" costs such as gas adjustments and warm weather adjustments.

4. Heating oil gives you more service options

While natural gas comes from one big utility, oil gives you the option of several local service providers. Not only this, but you also get many more options in terms of payment. Heating oil providers provide the choice to call as you need oil, go on automatic delivery, set up monthly budget payments, prepay for your oil in the beginning of the season, and other options.

5. Heating oil is warmer and more versatile

Oil heat is 400 degrees hotter than natural gas. It heats up faster which means complete home comfort and no more long waits for the shower. It can also be set up with several different heating systems, like boilers, forced air, and radiators.

6. Heating oil is efficient

Oil burns at an 85 percent average efficiency rate, and even higher with newer models, like one from Energy Kinetics. Older heating systems operate at much lower efficiency rates. Many oil companies also offer pricing and payment plans to help you manage your energy bills.

7. Heating oil provides better hot water supply

Hot water recovery rates of an oil-fueled water heater are twice as fast as a natural gas water heater and three times as fast as an electric water heater. While an oil-fired water heater has a higher upfront cost than other types of water heaters, it will cost less to operate over time with virtually unlimited amounts of hot water.

8. Heating oil is popular

Heating oil continues to be a leading heating resource; in the winter of 2020-2021, about 5.3 million U.S. households used oil as their main heating fuel. Pennsylvania ranked number three out of the top five states.

9. Heating oil is clean

Today's heating oil is 95 percent cleaner than it was in 1970, and burner emission rates are approaching near-zero levels. Low-sulfur fuel oil products and biofuels will also reduce the already near-zero emissions. On the other hand, natural gas system losses account for 18 percent of total global methane emissions with a  methane content of 95 percent. This is a strong contributor to global warming issues.
