Biden's Green Energy Agenda- Gas Furnaces

The Biden administration is expected to soon finalize regulations restricting home gas-powered furnaces consumers are able to purchase in the future. More than 50% of Americans rely on residential gas furnaces for space heating. This decision would restrict consumer choice, drive prices higher and likely have a low impact on greenhouse gas emissions. More efficient systems cost more, and installation costs could be a big problem for homes that are not compatible with condensing furnaces.

These proposed regulations would require furnaces to achieve an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of 95% by 2029. For this plan to work, manufacturers would only be allowed to sell furnaces that convert at least 95% of fuel into heat within 6 years. The current market standard AFUE for a residential furnace is 80%.
The industry group has argued consumers would be better served if the agency allowed the free market to naturally increase product efficiency. Between 40-60% of current residential furnaces on the market would be prohibited under the proposed regulation.

There is an active policy push intended to address climate change. Their outcomes though restrict the options and availability of direct use of natural gas for consumers. Removing this option from consumers could result in a counterproductive result and increase costs to consumers and emissions associated with the energy use by those consumers.

DOE claimed last year that efficiency standards would save the average family about $100 a year and reduce carbon emissions by 373 million metric tons and methane emissions by 5.1 million tons.

The main goal of this policy is to be reasonable enough to be a fair and affordable choice to users looking for higher efficiency products. Although, many products such as pool pumps, gas stoves, ceiling fans, dishwashers, etc. will have to start following these future efficiency standards.

As an HVAC company, staying informed about these policies will help us  better serve our customers and guide them towards energy-efficient solutions. By offering a range of efficient gas furnaces and educating homeowners about their benefits, we are ready to help you to contribute to a greener future while meeting future heating standards.
