Why Indoor Air Quality Is Even More Important During the Pandemic

Are you experiencing unexplained eye, nose, and throat irritation? Headaches and fatigue? Or even respiratory issues? There is likely a very simple underlying issue: your indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality, or IAQ, is more important than you think -- and even more so now with the spread of the COVID-19 virus. With the average American spending almost 90 percent of their life indoors, healthy air is vital.

Not only this, but the people are who typically most susceptible to the adverse effects of pollutants (e.g. older adults) are usually the ones spending even more time indoors.

Indoor air quality statistics

Although much solid information remains up in the air about the virus, scientists have established that it is easily transmitted through airborne particles. But it still isn't widely recognized that indoor spaces are a hotspot for COVID.

"The WHO and other health authorities have failed to clearly prioritize measures to improve indoor air quality to reduce the chance of catching COVID-19, says Jose-Luis Jimenez, an atmospheric chemist at the University of Colorado at Boulder."

Solutions to Poor IAQ

So how can you improve your IAQ, prevent transmission of the virus, and ensure you're breathing healthy air year-round? The CDC recommends a "layered approach to reduce exposures," which includes improvements to ventilation and other air cleaning products. In other words, you should consider upgrading your HVAC system.

The types of IAQ products within your HVAC system can be separated into four categories:
  1. Air purification products clean air by eliminating biological contaminants. One type of purifier is an air scrubber, like the Aerus Air Scrubber which removes over 99% of all surface and airborne contaminants.
  2. Filtration products act as a barrier by keeping the inside of your HVAC unit clean, therefore maximizing its efficiency and, in the process, reducing airborne particulate like bacteria.
  3. Ventilation products work by forcing fresh air into spaces. Ventilation can also be as simple as opening a window to let fresh air into the home. Replacing the air in your home often is one of the most important factors when it comes to IAQ.
  4. Humidity control products maintain moisture levels and make it harder for germs to live in the air.
Not only will these products aid in defending against the virus, but they are also helpful in reducing respiratory issues that will come with the upcoming allergy season. Having an HVAC expert install an air filter or check for leaks in the ductwork will ensure that you're staying happy and healthy.

Whether you want to install an air purifier, humidifier/dehumidifier, advanced filtration system, or high-quality ventilation system, ECI Comfort has the solution. Check out an air scrubber installation that was done for one of our clients in April of 2020! Better yet, ECI is offering anti-virus bundles that will help you create the safest possible indoor environment for your home.

We are here to help you stay healthy and maintain comfort year round, both during and post-pandemic.
