Is It Normal for My AC to Drip Water Outside?

As the weather heats up and your air conditioner kicks into high gear, you might notice a steady drip of water coming from the outdoor unit. Understandably, this can raise questions and concerns for homeowners—but don’t worry. In most cases, it’s totally normal. Let’s break down what’s going on, and when it might signal a problem.

Why Your AC Drips Water Outside

Your air conditioner doesn’t just cool your home—it also removes excess humidity from the air. Here's how it works:
  1. Warm indoor air passes over your AC's cold evaporator coil.
  2. Moisture in the air condenses on the coil (just like water droplets on a cold glass).
  3. That moisture (now liquid water) collects in a drain pan and flows out through a condensate drain line to the outside.
This is why you’ll often see a small amount of water dripping outside near your AC unit, especially on hot, humid days. It’s a sign that your system is doing its job properly!

When Dripping Water Isn't Normal

While outdoor dripping is normal, water leaking inside your home is not. If you notice water:
  • Pooling around your indoor unit
  • Staining your ceiling or walls
  • Dripping from vents or ducts

It could mean something’s wrong, like:

  • A clogged or disconnected drain line
  • A cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Ice buildup on the coil that’s melting improperly
  • Low refrigerant causing the coil to freeze and then thaw erratically
Any of these issues can lead to water damage, mold growth, and costly repairs if left unchecked.

What to Do If You See Water Inside

If you spot water around your indoor unit, don’t ignore it. Shut off your system and call an HVAC professional right away. At ECI Comfort, our technicians can quickly diagnose and fix the problem before it leads to bigger headaches.

Routine Maintenance Helps Prevent Leaks

The best way to avoid AC water issues is with regular maintenance, including:
  • Clearing the drain line
  • Checking the drain pan for cracks or rust
  • Ensuring proper refrigerant levels
  • Cleaning or replacing air filters regularly
Seasonal AC tune-ups can catch small issues before they become major repairs.
