March Sadness 2022 Recap

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2022 March Sadness competition; those who entered in the giveaway, those who voted in the tournaments, and those who viewed and read our coverage of the tournament all made this a huge success!

Our goal with this tournament is to help someone who could use a brand new HVAC system so that they can finally feel comfortable in their home. While most good causes require monetary donations or a lot of your time, ours requires just a quick entry or simple click to vote. On Monday, April 4, Kansas beat North Carolina in the NCAA Championship game. And with that, one of our lucky teams received a brand new HVAC system worth up $20,000! Let's meet our winner and recap how it works with examples from the giveaway.

2022 March Sadness Winner

The winner of this year's giveaway was Team Love Not War. Team members Nolan and Christine could not stand another blazing hot summer in their North Philly rowhome. With just bulky window units for cooling, they were constantly overheating and feeling uncomfortable in their home. #TeamLoveNotWarBy being one of the teams with the most votes in their initial tournament, Team Love Not War was assigned a No. 1 seed in the final tournament, giving them a better chance to win. After a nerve-wracking Championship game, the Kansas Jayhawks pulled out a win and made this team's dreams come true! After the big win, we got in touch with Nolan and Christine and got to work installing their brand new Mitsubishi Ductless Heating and Cooling system. They'll now enjoy cool summers as well as have supplemental heat during the winter. Check out their video below.

How it Works

Here's a recap of how the competition worked each step of the way.

Phase 1: Enter Your Sad HVAC Unit

Submit a photo of your ready-to-be-replaced HVAC unit, along with a short description of why your unit is the worst. It could be an old heater or air conditioner that needs an upgrade, a system that completely failed, or anything in between. Check out just a few of the submissions below!

Phase 2: Play in a Conference Tournament

All submissions are assigned team names and entered into conference tournaments as they're received. Each player is sent a link to the tournament so that they can share it with friends and families and receive votes for their team.

More votes = a better chance that you will get assigned a high seed #, giving you a better chance to win the entire March Sadness tournament. That's because your team will be matched with the corresponding seed # in the actual NCAA March Madness tournament. Once you are assigned a seed, your team's fate is left up to how your team does in March Madness. For example, if you get a lot of votes, you may be assigned a #1 seed, which means you may be matched with Arizona. Since they are a top team, there's a good chance they will make it far in the competition.

Check out some of the conference tournaments below!

As everyone votes, we share tournament breakdowns from our ECI reporting team, as well as bracketology reports. Check out the videos here. Review some bracketology reports below.

Phase 3: Selection Sunday

After the conference tournaments end right before Selection Sunday, our Selection Committee takes a look at the votes along with other factors to determine which teams will play in the March Sadness tournament and what seed #'s they will receive. It is narrowed down to the top 20 teams, and each team receives three different seed #'s/three different teams in the NCAA tournament. See table below.

Phase 4: March Sadness Tournament

Now fate is left up to the March Madness tournament. Your team won't be eliminated from our tournament until all three of your assigned teams lose in March Madness. Check out the 2022 completed bracket below.March Sadness Bracket Championship-1

Phase 5: Win a New System!

The winner of the tournament sets up a free consultation with one of our comfort specialists. We assess the HVAC unit and home and make plans for the new system. Then we install your brand new system that's worth up to $20,000! This year's winner is Team Love Not War. Their window AC units are just not cutting it to keep their Philadelphia rowhome cool, and they are upgrading to a Ductless Mini-Split system.

Stay tuned to see how the completed installation and comments from the winning team!
