How Does Ductless Work?
Ductless heating and cooling mini-splits work by pumping coolant or heated refrigerant back and forth between a heat pump or air conditioner outside and air handlers in the rooms you’re treating.
That refrigerant either pumps heat into the air handler in the winter or transports heat out of the room as part of the air conditioning in the summer. This way, you get the heating or cooling you want without requiring ductwork to push forced air all throughout the house.
Depending on what you need, you can go with a 1:1 setup with a single indoor unit in a problem room connected to a heat pump outside. Or, add up to eight air handlers to a single heat pump to treat your entire home.
Components of a Mini-Split System
Indoor air handler
These units circulate air throughout your home. They also handle the dehumidification part of the air conditioning process. High-wall units like the one here are the most common. You can also choose from low-wall units near the floor or recessed cassettes that fit flush against the ceiling.
Outdoor heat pump or air conditioner
The heat pump or AC condenser transfers warmth in or out of your home, depending on which function you're using. Each air handler connects to this component. They’re quieter and smaller than conventional outdoor condensers. Depending on the model, heat pumps provide heat in sub-zero temperatures and cool your home in triple-digit temperatures.
Line sets
Line sets run between the air handlers and the outdoor unit. They contain a small line transporting the coolant in a closed loop between the indoor and outdoor components. The set includes power cables and a condensate drain that removes moisture from dehumidification.
Ductless Features and Benefits
Inverter technology
Ductless heating and cooling systems don’t cycle on and off like traditional forced-air heat and central air conditioning. Instead, they use INVERTER technology to work at variable speeds depending on your exact needs.
Sensors detect any hot or cold spots in a room. Then, specialized fans direct the treated air to the exact spots that need it.
The temperature stays constant instead of swinging up and down by a few degrees all the time. It’s more comfortable, quieter, and saves you money.
Personalized programming
Each air handler has its own remote control. There’s no reaching around to make adjustments, and the easy interface makes it easy to adjust on the fly or program for later.
And, you don’t even need to be home to make adjustments. Using an app for any smart device, you can track energy usage, change settings, and program your heating and air conditioning from anywhere you have an internet connection.
