Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?

It’s July in Pennsylvania, the heat index is climbing, and suddenly your AC is blowing warm air. If that’s you, you’re not alone—this is one of the most-Googled HVAC issues for homeowners in summer 2025.
At ECI Comfort, we help homeowners throughout Bucks County, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia stay cool and comfortable. Here’s how to troubleshoot the issue and know when it’s time to call in the pros (us).

6 Reasons Your AC Might Be Blowing Warm Air

1. Your thermostat settings are off

Double-check your thermostat:
  • Set to “Cool”, not “Fan” or “Heat”
  • Target temp is lower than the room temp
  • Fan mode is set to “Auto”, not “On”
Easy Fix: Adjust settings or replace batteries if needed.

2. Clogged or dirty air filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow, which can cause overheating—or even frozen coils.

Tip: Replace your filter every 1–2 months, especially in summer.

3. Low refrigerant or a leak

If your system is low on refrigerant, it can’t remove heat properly—so you’ll feel warm air. Call a professional for this task!

4. Dirty or blocked outdoor unit

The outdoor condenser coil releases heat. If it’s dirty or blocked, your system won’t cool effectively.

Quick Fix: Rinse coils with a garden hose (power off first) and keep the area around it clear.

5. Blown fuse or electrical issue

Your indoor blower may be working—but if the compressor isn’t, you’ll only feel room-temperature air.

Pro Help Needed: Don’t DIY electrical repairs. Call an expert.

6. Leaky ductwork

If you have central AC and the ducts are leaking, cooled air might be escaping into the attic or walls.

What To Do Next

If your AC is still blowing warm air:
  • Change the filter
  • Reset the thermostat
  • Check the outdoor unit
  • Then call ECI for a professional diagnosis
