Worst Air Conditioner Contest: How Comfort Madness 2 Works

Comfort Madness 2 is a local worst air conditioner contest for homeowners in ECI Comfort’s service area in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. You enter the tired, loud, or ugly system you already own, tell the story behind it, and compete for a new Trane air conditioner — while everyone who enters walks away with real, guaranteed value.
Most HVAC giveaways you hear about are either vague on the details or sound too good to be true. Comfort Madness  is set up the opposite way: the rules, dates, prizes, and judging criteria are written down in plain English and posted publicly. You can see exactly what’s on the line and how the winners are chosen before you spend a minute entering.
The Promotion runs from August 3, 2026 through August 28, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern. It’s open to homeowners 18 and over in ECI’s service area — Bucks County, Montgomery County, Philadelphia, and nearby parts of Delaware, Mercer, and Burlington Counties. It’s structured as a skill-based contest, not a lottery, raffle, or game of chance.

What You Get Just for Entering — Even If You “Lose”

Here’s the part that matters if you’re skeptical: you do not have to win the bracket to come out ahead. Every eligible entrant gets two concrete things by email, usually within an hour of entering, whether their system is crowned the worst in Bucks County or never makes the Sweet 16.

First, you receive a $500 Comfort Madness Credit toward a complete replacement heating or cooling system installed by ECI Comfort. There’s no raffle, no spinning wheel, no “maybe” — the credit is guaranteed for every qualifying homeowner, one per household. It has to be used on a full system replacement and redeemed by September 30, 2026, and it can’t be stacked with other offers or promotional financing.

Second, you get a free 22‑point precision tune-up on the equipment you entered. That’s a real technician visit, normally valued at about $189, where a tech checks the key components, takes readings, and gives you a straight answer on how much life your system likely has left. If they find a safety issue or a major failure, diagnostic and repair options are quoted separately so you can decide.
Add those together and the approximate value of the “just for entering” package is around $700. For many homeowners, that alone makes the 90‑second entry worthwhile — especially if you’ve been putting off maintenance for a few seasons or worrying quietly that this might be the summer your system finally gives out.

The 7 Ways Your AC Can Win (Without Just Being Old)

A lot of people talk themselves out of entering contests like this because they assume, “Someone else definitely has it worse.” Comfort Madness 2 was deliberately built to push back on that thinking. Instead of only rewarding the single oldest unit in the county, it creates seven different lanes your system might fit into.

The Fossil

If your condenser’s nameplate starts with “19” — 1998, 1995, or earlier — that’s a strong contender for the oldest confirmed unit still limping along. But that’s only one category.

The Frankenstein

The Frankenstein rewards systems patched together from mismatched parts, multiple brands, and at least one repair that involved tape or other improvisation.

The Eyesore

The eyesore is for the unit you hide behind trash cans because it’s rusted, dented, faded, or half-eaten by a shrub.

The Screamer

The screamer is the one you can hear kick on from inside the house with the windows closed, louder than the lawnmower.

The Upstairs Sauna

The Upstairs Sauna is for homes that are fine on the first floor but brutal in the back bedroom or second story every July.

The Money Pit

The Money Pit — systems that have racked up repair bills or summer electric costs that make you flinch when the statement lands.

The Wildcard

The Wildcard exists for the story that makes the judges stop and reread it out loud. Maybe your AC died the day you brought a newborn home, or you’ve duct-taped the panel for five summers straight. If your story is honest and memorable, it has a lane.
Enter To Win

How to Enter in 90 Seconds: Photos, Story, and Safety

The contest is designed so that an ordinary homeowner with a smartphone can enter in about a minute and a half. There are three basic steps: snap the information the judges need, describe what the system is doing (or not doing), and hit submit so your credit and tune-up can be delivered.

Step one is to go outside and locate the metal data plate on your condenser. Take a clear photo of it — that gives ECI the actual age and model information instead of a guess. While you’re there, grab one wider shot of the whole unit. For categories like The Eyesore or The Screamer, that photo tells half the story.
Step two is the written part. On the entry form, you’ll check off the problems that apply — loud, unreliable, high bills, uneven cooling, constant repairs — and then write at least 140 characters explaining why you deserve a new air conditioner. Funny is welcome, but honesty carries real weight in the scoring.

Step three is simply to submit your entry with your contact information. A complete entry includes your name, address, town, ZIP, mobile number, email, and homeowner status. Once that’s verified, your $500 credit and free tune-up voucher are emailed to you. If you’re not comfortable entering online, you can call 215‑245‑3200 during office hours or even mail in an entry with the same required information.

Is It Worth Entering If Your AC Isn’t the Absolute Worst?

The short answer is yes — and not just because someone has to win. The structure of Comfort Madness 2 is intentionally tilted so that a very ordinary, moderately miserable system can compete, and so that every homeowner who enters gets something of real value regardless of the final scoreboard.
Remember that the seven categories go far beyond “oldest.” A twelve‑year‑old builder-grade unit that can’t keep the second floor below 80°F on a humid day has a genuine shot in The Upstairs Sauna. A system that has eaten three capacitors and a compressor in five years is right at home in The Frankenstein or The Money Pit.

At the same time, the floor is soft. Worst case, you invest a few minutes taking pictures and writing your story, and in return you receive a $500 credit toward a future system plus a professional tune-up you might have paid nearly two hundred dollars for anyway. That’s a very different proposition from a typical one‑winner‑takes‑all giveaway.
