Mitsubishi Electric is rolling out the GS model -- a newer and more efficient version of the GL model. The MSZ-GS is compatible with Mitsubishi Electric’s single-zone and multi-zone heat pumps or the H2i® systems. Its counterpart, the MSY-GS, is a single-zone air conditioner for climates where heating is not necessary. In this article, we'll cover the main features and benefits of the new model.
Features and Benefits
Homeowners can now get their hands on the highly anticipated GS model, with the Hyper-Heat version set to make its debut later this Fall. The main difference between the new GS Hyper-Heat and the current FS Hyper-Heat is that the GS models only go down to five degrees, compared to negative five degrees on the FS models. In addition, the GS model has a slightly lower SEER2 rating and does not have the i-SEE sensor that the FS models have.
Let's dive into the features and benefits.
Dual Barrier coating
Indoor units now come with Dual Barrier coating, which is applied to the heat exchanger, fan, and vanes. This coating protects the interior of the unit against the build-up of dust, dirt, and oil, thereby reducing maintenance and increasing lifespan and efficiency. With fewer repairs and increased efficiency, you'll also save money each year.
User-friendly remote
The handheld remote controller, which functions as the thermostat, now features English text instead of icons for mode settings. That means no more confusing snowflakes or suns on the remotes. See the comparison below.

Improved efficiency
The switch from the GL to the GS unit also comes with efficiency improvements. The new model boasts a SEER2 rating of up to 28.4, compared to 24.3 SEER2 previously. With improved efficiency, you'll feel more comfortable and save money at the same time.
Blue Fin coating
The outdoor units, whether it be the MSZ-GS heat pump or the MYZ-GS air conditioner, now come standard with Blue Fin coating on the heat exchanger. This anti-corrosion coating on the aluminum fins allows for increased coil protection and longer life, similar to the Dual Barrier coating.
Other benefits
The GS model is Mitsubishi Electric's most flexible indoor solution with a wide range of sizes from six to 24 KBTU/H, as well as as a Powerful Mode for rapidly cooling or heating a space to the desired temperature. In addition, there's Swing Mode, which can move air throughout the room like an oscillating fan, and Econo Cool, which adjusts the amount of air directed toward occupants based on the air-outlet temperature
If you're looking to upgrade your current GL model to the GS series, please note that in 1-to-1 (single-zone) applications, GL and GS models are not backward compatible. This means that a GS indoor unit must be matched with a GS outdoor unit. In multi-zone applications (existing or new), you can use both series without any issues.
